Overview: from survey to handover
Home battery installation follows fixed phases. First a survey checks whether your meter cupboard, inverter and chosen location are suitable. The cupboard may then be upgraded, often on a separate visit. Then comes installation day: mounting, wiring, connection, testing and handover. Mounting and electrical connection usually happen in one day.

No two homes are the same. A terraced house with a full hall cupboard needs different preparation than a detached home with a garage. The steps stay the same, but timing and workload per phase can differ. After the survey you know where you stand.
Timeline: what happens when
Not everything happens on one day. This sequence is typical for a standard home with solar panels. Allow several weeks from first contact to a working battery, especially if the meter cupboard must be upgraded first.

Site survey
Site survey
The installer inspects your meter cupboard, available space and connection to solar panels or inverter. Distances, ventilation and accessibility are measured; free circuits and main switch capacity are checked. The intended battery location is assessed: floor or wall, temperature and clearance.

You
Ensure access to meter cupboard and battery location. Have inverter details (brand/model on sticker) or P1 information ready. Allow 45–90 minutes. No drilling or mounting during the survey.
Quick answers for this step plan
- Can survey and installation happen on one day?
- Rarely. The survey comes first, then possibly cupboard work and material ordering. Only in simple cases with a suitable cupboard can it go faster. You will hear that after the survey.
- Do I need to contact the grid operator myself?
- Usually not for a standard home battery behind the meter on its own circuit. If the main connection must be upgraded, your installer will point that out. That is a separate process and not needed in every home.
- What if the survey advises a different location?
- Planning adjusts. Discuss alternatives (garage, utility room or outdoor) before booking installation day. A location without proper ventilation or access will not be connected.
- Will there be drilling or noise on installation day?
- Yes, to a limited extent. Wall or floor fixings and sometimes a cable pass need drilling. Usually less time than a kitchen fit. Telling neighbours is not required but courteous for early starts in terraced housing.
